Shaitan-Merdven Pass offers a spectacular view of the coatline from Cape Sarych, the extreme southern point of the Crimea almost up to Cat Mount.
Shaitan-Merdven Pass (Devil’a Staircase) is a pleasant, convenient even for elderly people mountain pass. Moreover, it is well seen and well marked.
In fact, not only nature did its best to facilitate ascending. Legionaries laid a road from Tauric Chersonesus to Kharaks Fortress in late antiquity when the Crimea was guarded by the Roman garrisons.
The road is even on mountain pasture and very handy among wild cliffs.
One can see steep precipices and pine-trees miraculously clinging to them, tiny groves of madrono (or shameless tree) in crevices . Some graceful madrono trees are 300-400 years old.
The panoramic view of the coastline from Cape Sarych, the extreme southern point of the Crimea almost up to Cat Mount is really spectacular. The ascend though being steep , but without any surprises, dangers or dizzy rises.
