Cape Fiolent

  • Cape Fiolent
  • Cape Fiolent is a natural landmark located on the western extremity of the Western Crimean Coast, where its narrow land gets even narrower and in southern part of Heraclean Peninsula dominates above the sea precipitously. Harsh, wild cliffs almost 300 ft. high stand in great masses above the sea. Chaotic boulder accumulations, miniature islands and archs were formed in coastal ravines.

Harsh, wild cliffs almost 300 ft. high stand in great masses above the sea. Chaotic boulder accumulations, miniature islands and archs were formed in coastal ravines.
Narrowly topped Cape Fiolent and huge Diana Grotto are the most striking landforms.

The name Fiolent probably derived from the Turkish “Filenk-Burun” meaning “tiger cape” – the precipice of the cape if formed by alternating stripes of yellow limestone and dark trachyte, which all resembles tiger skin. There are other names of the cape – St. George Cape or Chifuros. But most of all the name of the cape is translated as “the God’s land”.

The cape is located on Heraclean Peninsula between St. George Monastery, Diana Ravine and Lermontov’s Cape to the south-east of Cape Chersonesus. The cape is formed by volcanic materials of an primeval volcano. Cape Fiolent is shaped like a huge stone pyramid with beaches at its foot.

Fine water of Jasper beach and white sand bottom with seaweed-grown underwater stones strewn here and there – all represent a fantastic sight. A monastery stairway consisting of 800 steps ad built by the monks in 1891 leads to the Jasper beach (fine pebbles and sand).

This place is often connected with Ancient Greek myth of Iphigenia. It is supposed that Temple of Tauri Maiden (Parthenon) was located on Cape Fiolent, in which Tauri people were sacrificing foreigners who survived in naval disasters near the coastline of the Trakhean peninsula in Crimea.

Cape Fiolent is the starting point of the Crimean Southern Coast, and its beauty can be a fine match to those beautiful places we can observe on the Southern Coast. Fiolent is not so widely famous as the Southern Coast (like Balaklava, Filent had been a military area of restricted access for a long time). In 1984, the place was declared a reserve area occupying 5 hectares. Growths of juniper and of other plants can be seen on wild precipitous cliffs over 300 ft. high.
